WHAT IS AGRICULTURAL GYPSUM?
Agricultural gypsum is a soft mineral that often appears in nature in crystallized formations and masses called selenite. Our gypsum is a unique synthetic product derived from flue gas desulfurization (FGD) systems at electric power plants. Sulfur dioxide emission control systems used by coal-fired power plants remove sulfur from combustion gases using “scrubbers.” One particular type of scrubber that uses lime or limestone reagent and a forced oxidation system produces “FGD gypsum,” which is chemically the same as mined natural gypsum (CaSO4 2H2O) and provides a wide-range of environmentally friendly applications.
WHAT ARE THE POTENTIAL BENEFITS OF AGRICULTURAL GYPSUM?
There are a number of potential benefits of applying FGD gypsum to agricultural soils. These can be either chemical or physical. Chemical benefits result from supplying essential plant nutrients such as calcium (Ca) for crop production or by modifying the subsoil to create a more favorable medium for plant root development (e.g., decreasing aluminum (Al) toxicity, promoting clay flocculation, enhancing root penetration, increasing water extraction from subsoil layers, etc.).
The physical benefits include the promotion of clay flocculation and aggregation of the soil, reduction of surface crusting which leads to increased water infiltration. These changes result in reduced runoff and erosion. For example, application of FGD material improves soil chemistry and increases water availability and crop yield as a result of reduction of subsoil chemical restrictions on rooting depth, while at the same time increasing water infiltration into the surface soil. A number of soil physical and related properties have been positively affected by the use of FGD gypsum such as reduced strength of subsoil hardpan layers. Improved soil aggregation leads to improved soil aeration and reduced bulk density. (Source: www.fgdproducts.org)
La-Lyn draws knowledge from their third generation farm that has been applying agricultural gypsum on our own fields for over 15 years. During that time, we have witnessed the improvement of our soil quality, and the improvement in crop production. One call to La-Lyn does it all, from sourcing gypsum, to delivery and application at your location. We believe in what gypsum does for us.
